Google Contacts is evolving into more than just a basic contact list, with the addition of new features and capabilities that make it a proactive management tool. One such feature is the “Highlights” tab, which was added in December 2022 and has since been updated with a “For you” section that shows upcoming birthdays of your contacts.
The “For you” section appears between the Favorites and Recents sections and displays the contact’s name, profile picture, and the date of their upcoming birthday, as well as a countdown timer. Users can then easily call or text the contact with the provided shortcuts. This functionality is similar to what Google Messages already offers and is also found in Google Assistant notifications.
While the addition of the “For you” section is not critical, it does add to the overall usefulness of the app. Google is currently conducting an in-app survey to determine how helpful users find the Highlights feature and which aspect they find most helpful.
Google Contacts is now more than just a simple list of contacts, as it aims to be a destination for getting assistance related to people in your life. The app is continually evolving, with the addition of new features and an updated interface. With the introduction of Material You on Android 11, Google Contacts is also getting a visual overhaul.
Overall, Google Contacts is evolving to become a more proactive tool for managing your contacts and helping you stay connected with the important people in your life.
